In ancient times it was called the city of Bakkah, Mecca is now officially known as Makkah Al-Mukarramah. The holy city of Muslims is located 450.4 kilometers from Medina and 70 kilometers inland from Jeddah, at an altitude of 227 meters (909 feet) above the Red Sea at the bottom of the dry sand of Wadi Ibrahim.
